News from the Garden

The Cedaroak Park school garden was built during the 2005-2006 school year with donations from the PTA, the West Linn-Wilsonville School District, and a local lumber company.

In the winter, parents and staff worked together to build 11 raised beds so that all students would have the chance to garden.  Classes teamed up with other classes in their grade level, or with their buddy class to plant in the spring.  Over the past years, we have had pumpkin and sunflower patches, bird gardens, salad gardens, herb gardens, flower beds, and more.  Parent volunteers have played a huge part in the gardening process.

The opportunity to work in the garden throughout the school year provides many benefits for the students.  The garden is a place for hands-on learning, a place for all areas of the curriculum to combine... from reading and writing, to math and science, to creative arts and physical education.  Students are able to explore, observe, wonder & imagine, predict, record, and experiment.  It is a place for students to take responsibility, be part of a community, and see how their actions can change the world around them.  Best of all, working in the garden is a lot of fun, and helps students learn healthy habits!

If you are interested in helping volunteer in our school garden, during the year,  please contact your child's teacher to see if they could use your help.  Thank you!
